This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title I school with the most diverse population of children in our district. Over 66% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. Not only are the many of our students from other countries, we also have a large population of military families who move to and from a variety of places all over the world.
Our students and their families have had to deal with many hurdles and unforeseen changes during this pandemic.
The students need and crave consistency in their lives, especially during these uncertain times. School is where expectations are consistent and basic needs are met every day. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real. Since returning to school, they are happier, more confident, and eager to learn in an engaging environment where they feel safe.
My Project
My students missed most of their entire first year of in-person Kindergarten due to the pandemic. Some of my students did not attend Kindergarten at all. They were not able to play and build with their friends or with other students. They did not problem-solve together or be get to be creative with each other. Their ability to pay attention and focus on their learning has been compromised due to not being in a regular classroom setting. I know that a classroom full of STEM activities will not only increase their focusing and problem-solving skills, but also support students in learning how to work as a team.
I am a first-year teacher of a first-grade classroom that is in need of sufficient STEM materials, which will inspire students to design and build together.
STEM activities will be used daily to increase focusing stamina, spark creativity, and teach students how to work as a team. They will learn how to problem solve together through trial and error. The new materials will be fun, interactive, and will keep students motivated to successfully complete their projects. Problem solving is a life skill and if it is nurtured when students are young, they will be more successful in school and able to handle challenging situations as they occur throughout their lifetime.
