This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students have been advocating for the educational needs of teenagers beyond their immediate community. They want to help others who do not attend school. They want to meet with students who may be enrolled in other classes and subject areas (and even schools since we share a campus) in order to make these students feel welcomed and encourage them to learn. The entryway to this is getting them the supplies they need to feel successful, namely notebooks.
Our students want to help the teenagers who are not coming to school because they feel unprepared or unmotivated.
The students want to reach out to them and get them the key notes and understandings that will help them in their courses and lead them towards getting a diploma. The students want to offer the kindness and the follow-through that will help them to build a stronger community, because we are stronger together.
Our student based service initiative is that we will have a number of student advocates who will find reach out to students who are not attending high school. They will reach out to them over social media and / or phone and kindly offer to tutor them, catch them up, or merely just offer a hand in getting their notebooks settled and preparing them for attending classes. The student advocates will pick up the notebooks and deliver them to the students. The community beyond the school community will benefit as a result.
The community will be improved because everyone will see we are in this together and looking out for each other. When the students we reach see that there is follow through, and their notebooks are delivered by their advocate, they will adore their new, inclusive community.
