Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Special Population students are the sweetest and most curious group! They have a variety of different interests like music, painting, dancing and sensory play. We strive each day to highlight each individual's abilities, from humming to the tune of a song, using a communication device to participate in a story, to using sign language and gestures to greet our friends.
My Project
Communication is a basic need for all students. Special Population students typically have large obstacles in their communication abilities. Those obstacles are multiplied when coupled with a visual impairment. The 3D printer can bring words to LIFE for students with limited or no vision. Students in our program rely heavily on visuals throughout their school day as well as home life, some of these include: picture schedules for daily routines, communication boards to express basic wants/needs and picture symbols to request familiar objects/actions/people. Students without visual impairments point to picture symbols or are shown picture symbols everyday and in all academic areas.
Give students with visual impairments the voice they deserve .
By donating a 3D printer, we can use 3D objects to represent those same symbols we use daily with our visual learners. The familiarity of the symbols will increase inclusion for our visually impaired students with their peers, teachers and families.
