These 11th grade, mostly very low SES, biology students all want to go to college. The school's focus is technology and science. As a charter school, our funding has been drastically impacted by the current financial environment.
Fetal pigs are only used once and are expensive for a high school science class budget. We need a lot of other lab supplies. We could do an online simulation, but since the first day of class my students have been asking me, "Are we going to get to dissect something in this class?"
We have all the other supplies we need: dissection trays, scalpels, and written materials/guides. All we need are the fetal pigs to dissect. Dissection is such a good way for students to visualize what organs actually look like and how organs and body systems are actually connected. Many of our students want to go into medicine and will eventually take anatomy. It's so crucial to have held a scalpel and looked at another animal before dissecting a person.
Your contribution will ensure that these students' investment in dissection and desire to learn more does not go unsatisfied.
