My Students

Hurricane Sandy hit Staten Island, New York and devastated all of us. As many were evacuated, many were not. Staten Island is now an island of devastation. My students with disabilities were forced to abandon their homes, some are now homeless, others replaced and some returned to only rubble .

I teach students with Autism and Multiple Disabilities from 2nd to 8th grade.

I work with over eighty students that attend specialized classes in a specialized school. They want to understand what happened to them during Hurricane Sandy and we can be sad but we can also have fun learning new things while playing games. Do you remember when you were a child and how much fun it was to play games? Don't you remember playing board games with your mom, dad, brother or sister? Didn't it make you feel so good? These children now need our school more than ever to provide a nurturing environment for them. They come to school to feel both safe and wanted. My goal is to inspire a love for playing games in STEM topics, as well as other areas to show them the amazing wonders this world has to offer. Whether it is a game, computer game, activity on the smart board, iPad, playing with manipulatives or just sharing a book, they love to learn new things in a variety of different ways

My Project

Having a child with autism can be very difficult. Sometimes a child cannot concentrate, sometimes they don't understand how to play games their first or even second time you teach it to them. So, as a teacher I would like to support the families by introducing board games into my classroom and providing the correct social skills for my children. The families of my students need support from the school and they value and appreciate all of the support the school is able to supply. These games will be so much more than just a tool used in the classroom to build basic skills, they will carry out as something that a the parents will be able to communicate and play with the children while they are at home. The game sets such as bingo, space future, buy it right, operation and other games will make school and their learning fun and enjoyable in this time of devastation.

With your help, I will be able to provide my students with an enjoyable outlet to overcome the devastation in their lives.

Also, this will give them the chance to use their critical thinking, social skills, and hand-eye coordination while having fun. With all of the materials I have in my class that provide education, I believe there should be some stimulation that is fun as well, these children need it right now during these saddened times. Thank you in advance for being so kind and generous.
