Student's Collaborate and Communicate Across the Sciences

My students need a Netbook computer to update our website, blog, and class spreadsheets for data sharing and communication with students in other classes and schools.

My Students

On the edge of making real science and collaboration happen in the classroom, limited by access to computers and technology. Let's make science assessments authentic and real. Let's share data, publish student work for others to read. not just teachers. Students edit text and graphs in real time.

In southwestern Montana, we are a small rural school trying to give students unique learning experiences in science.

In a valley that sometimes challenges science, I want my students to have access to Internet resources and technology. We have a computer lab and a mobile lab that fill up with dozens of other classes trying to get kids using Web 2.0 tools and integrating technology. They may be able to text and record TV shows, but they do not wisely use the Internet. The struggle understanding even the basics about computers and technology. Although many have computers at home, most go home to moderate homes and have limited time and access to technology. The more we can integrate science and technology into the lives of rural students the better prepared they will be for life after school.

My Project

Students will enter data into a Google spreadsheet immediately after collecting it, to update a real-time graph and collaborate with students in other classes conducting the same experiments. Increase sample sizes and encourage responsibility and ownership of their results. We can bring the netbook to the river where we sample stream insects and do a live WebCast lesson for students in other classes. My Classroom Without Walls class will bring the netbook to the mountains and film a live WebCast to students in other classes about their current project: collecting bighorn sheep scat and running DNA analysis, or snow and avalanche safety, or sampling water chemistry in alpine lakes. With our Verizon modem and Internet access wherever we go, we can expand the ways students can collaborate and communicate.

This is where we put the goals of STEM education into action.

We put computers at the fingertips of students in in science classes. They can collaborate on lab reports, share data, share pictures and video with other classes and their parents. Putting their work out there for other students to see enlarges the audience and will help get us to the next level. With so many brilliant Internet applications, we only need access - in the classroom, one computer is not enough. Enable to inspire.
