This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes, and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that, I strive to help my students in any way possible.

My Project

I have officially been back in school for a week as I create this project. This year I was given the opportunity to loop up with my students from 2nd to 3rd grade! I was so excited when I found out the news, but knew that meant I would have to expand my classroom library to include new, higher level, engaging texts. My students' reading levels increased more than I have seen in years previous and I think it has been due to the donations of engaging books I have received through DonorsChoose.

My students have been introduced to the genre of graphic novels, and they are begging to read more of them.

I only have a few graphic novels in my current classroom library and I would love to have more of them, especially those in a series. Research has shown that graphic novels are actually more complex for students to read as they have to make more inferences in between the comic frames. Therefore if giving them the graphic novels they are already wishing to read will make them stronger readers, I am all for it!!

In this project I have included a mixture of different levels of graphic novels as well as different ones that I feel would interest my students. Some of them are biographies, fantasy, animals, or include diverse characters.
