Students Become Lifelong, Self-Directed Learners

My students need headphones to become self-directed learners which will be a core tenet of future leaning. Students will have a headphone to complete tasks and work at there own pace.

My Students

Located in the middle of Charlotte, NC, the students are a hard working diverse group of students. Predominately a Title I school made up of African American and Latino students, we also have recent immigrants, and students who speak a language other than English at home.

In my science class, the students are motivated to improve, yet need 21st century tools to take them to the next level.

The students love science and work hard in spite of learning disabilities and emotional disturbances in their lives. Our school has enabled the students to start a butterfly garden that will be run and operated by the students. Our school has a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) magnet program.

My Project

Each student having a set of headphones will enable a core tenet of future learning, self-directed learning. The student completes this type of learning individually, with little or no support from the teacher or another student. Self-directed learning is self-powered and self motivated learning. When a student needs help, he/she will get it. This has become a teachable moment. The students has become aware of their own misunderstanding and sought clarification.

Headphones will make self-directed leaning possible for each student.

A form of learning combines audio and visual. Viewing audiovisual information is highly engaging. The students will use a school laptop with the headphone to reach higher levels of achievement. Recording can vary from min-tutorials to videos of world-renowned experts to National Geographic specials.

Headphones are needed for students who are kinesthetic learners also. Students will watch a video about an experiment. As the video is watched the student can move, while other students are completing a different task. After the video is understood, the experiment is completed. If the experiment does not go as planed, the student can review to understand what went wrong.
