Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner city school. Most of my students come from a low income population. 80% of the students in my school are eligible for free lunch. Many of them do not have books or any reading materials at home. Often it's hard for parents to help them, because they are working. Also, many of my students are English Language Learners.

My science curriculum is very specific in teaching standards such as "observe and record the changes in the sun's...position...and the moons appearance" in the sky. The book "Sun Up, Sun Down, The Story of Day and Night" explains it at a level that they can understand. It also has instructions on how to make and use a simple sun dial. "What's the Weather Today?" will also help with this unit of study. "The First Egg" is an award winning book about animals and their life cycles, which is another science unit.

Rather than having to borrow books from the public library (which I often have to wait to be delivered from another library) it would be wonderful to have these particular books in my collection. "Abuela" is a book about a grandmother who 'flies' over New York City with her granddaughter. They see many historical landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty. This helps with my social studies curriculum because it is covering standards on landmarks, community and family. Each of these books would help my students understand key components of different curriculum standards. I selected each one carefully. "Read a Rhyme, Write a Rhyme" helps students get off the ground in writing in the poetry unit of study.

Your generosity will allow me to have particular hand-picked books in my classroom that are essential to teaching the first grade curriculum. You can empower me to become a better educator by improving my reading comprehension teaching skills with the book "Reading with Meaning". You have the power to help my first graders not only this year, but for years to come!
