Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the best in the city! They are curious and thoughtful and love exploring new ideas. They are self-motivated and are always ready to discover new things. My students are articulate and have amazing conversations in class.
I teach at a Title I school in New York where most of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the hardships they face at home, my students are always eager to learn about the world they live in. They amaze me daily.
My Project
Last year another teacher and I had a series of art workshops with parents and their children. We wanted it to be in the style of those paint nights adults usually have where everyone learns about a style of art then creates a piece of their own. We used what we had in the building which wasn't much. Although we didn't have the proper materials, the parents really enjoyed the afternoon spent with their children creating art. We are asking for watercolor paints, acrylic paints, crayons, markers, canvases and a variety of other types of paper.
This year we want to expand our art workshop into an art club that meets regularly.
Last year we were able to tie the art styles and artists to the social studies curriculum. For example, when studying black history month, we studied Romare Bearden. For science, when studying plants, we studied Georgia O'Keefe, an artist who was famous for painting large scale flowers. While parents are able to create masterpieces along side their children, they also get to learn about science and social studies alongside their children. Learning side by side will lead to deeper understanding for all involved.
