This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the School Counselor for 375 students in the outskirts of Tampa Bay Florida. My entire school serves nearly 1200 students. My school serves students that have a 52% free/reduced-price lunch rate. My darlings are very diverse in ethnicity; 19% Black, 70% White, 20% Hispanic, 14% Asian. Over half of my students (58%) are documented as having a disability. We have 2 Autism-Spectrum units on campus. Ten (10) percent of my students are Low 35th percentile (compared to the Florida average) in Math on the Florida Standards Assessments and around the same for Reading/Language Arts.
My Project
I will be teaching my students mindfulness techniques, breathing, meditative poses and more. This will help them with various emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression. This practice integrates social-emotional learning, meditation, philosophy, anatomy, asana (physical yoga), and community building into accessible themes designed for use in education.
For safety during their yoga practice, my students will need yoga mats.
I will use the yoga mats for my students to be able to practice safely and comfortably and to reduce possibility of injury.
Yoga and meditation will assist my students in grounding themselves to be well-rounded, peace-oriented students, and ultimately drive student success and resolve.
