My Students

We are a Title I school in a large district where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

My students range from kindergarten to fifth grade, but they all have a few things in common: inquiring minds, enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn.

They have risen to the challenges of online and hybrid learning admirably since March of 2020! Most come from low-income families who, while very supportive of our school and mission, simply cannot afford certain types of learning materials at home and may not have the ability to visit the public library. We also have English as a Second Language students at our school, with varying levels of English proficiency.

Despite these challenges, my students come to school (in person or online) smiling, ready to learn and read every day!

My Project

Every year, students in Kentucky get to make their voices heard with our state book award-the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards (KBA). At the elementary level, there are three KBA categories with 10 nominated books each: Preschool, K-2nd Grade, and 3rd-5th Grade, for a total of 30 books each year. Students read, either with me or independently, as many of the books in each category as they can before casting their votes each March.

Please help me give my Intermediate students the pride and confidence that comes with making their voices heard by voting, with a set of 2022 Grades 3-5 KBA-nominated books.

I am a firm believer in allowing student choice whenever possible, to build confidence and pride in my students. So I buy the KBA-nominated books each year, which can put a dent in any year's budget, let alone a COVID-era one.

Your help will ensure that I have these books, including diverse, educational, and entertaining titles, for my students to read for voting in 2022 and for years afterward. Thank you!
