Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
What excites me about this project is that my students have taken it upon themselves to improve our school! They are creating a student lounge. After school my students go and hang out in the Apple Store, playing with the technology, now they want to bring that same technology into our school!
The students have always been obsessed with Apple products. From the pad to the Mac Laptops. The school currently has one "Mac Lab", but it is 20 computers shared by seven schools, or 3,500 students. The availability of the lab is scarce to none for my students. Therefore, my students decided: "If we can't go to the Apple Lab, why not make it come to us!" And thus this project was born.
This project is the start of a series of student-led projects in efforts to build a student lounge equipped with the best technology, furniture, and amenities. The social-emotional benefits of a student lounge is that students feel they have a "safe haven" and it helps foster a sense of community for the students on their lunch breaks and after school. The student lounge will be a place where they can go and work on their homework, quietly socialize, study, or rest. It will allow them to "escape" the drama of the day and the multiple challenges they face coming from low income backgrounds.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to build a strong student centered community at our school. Working on encouraging our fellow peers to embrace education even when it seems tough or hopeless. Honestly, the struggle is real for many of us coming into school each day and staying after school is a tough choice for a variety of reasons. Having a student lounge with the latest technology and resources will make staying after school and being academically successful the "litt" thing to do.
We are going to spearhead this project to get it funded by hitting the streets and social media. That means asking our friends, family, and even strangers if needed. We will tweet, SnapChat, Instagram, and Facebook our project until we have it funded and we won't stop there. Then we will start on the next project. All in the effort to make our student lounge the poppin' place to be.
This project is so important because it will allow us to create a better student community in the confines of our school building. We come to school and have to go through metal detectors- having our liquids, phones, and lotions confiscated. Overall, it's an demeaning way to start the day. Having a lounge and workspace to decompress during the day and after school will help change our school from feeling like a prison to a school. Please help this happen!
