Student Studying Structures Need Healthy Hydroponics

Help me give my students the experience of growing herbs and vegetables inside a school with no outdoor garden or plant areas. They can build the system, plant the seeds, watch them grow, and sample fresh food.

My Project

My third through fifth grade gifted and talented students at Dean Allen Elementary School are studying Structures and Systems. They have learned about the Colorado River watershed and the long-term drought that we face. They track the water levels in Lake Mead and growing populations of the cities in the southwest. They teach their families and peers about the need for water conservation, study the systems that allow us to recycle our water in Las Vegas, and explore solutions to the water crisis we face.

Creating an indoor hydroponic garden at our school will allow students to use the engineering design process to build the structures necessary for a system that recycles water to grow food in a climate that is not friendly to family gardens and farms.

Our school has no planted green spaces for learning or outdoor gardens at this time, and the bright great room outside of our classroom is the perfect place for hydroponic growing. The light, temperature, water supply and nutrients can be controlled and the common space be used for the learning of many classes.

My students can create and learn through all of the areas of STEAM, from agricultural science, the technology of the hydroponic system, Ph levels and nutrients, engineering of the setup, art of plant journaling and microscopic explorations and sketches, and math through measurement of the materials, mediums, and growth. This learning will last throughout the school year and into years to come. Please help us plant these seeds of learning sustainable living through a hydroponic garden in the desert!
