This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, fun-loving middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. This is a special education History class for 6th and 8th graders.
Though they are in middle school, most are performing well below 3rd grade level in the area of reading and writing.
Nonetheless, I push my students hard everyday to write and read beyond their independent levels. Their struggle to learn is real. They have experienced so many disappointments that they need validation every day. They need to know when they are doing the right thing in my class so that they can keep doing that.
My Project
I use an individual points system that lets them know I appreciate and see the positive good work they are doing. They get points for not giving up when they are struggling, for showing leadership during group work, for helping a peer understand a concept and other important skills that go beyond the basics. This is how I establish a positive classroom culture that keeps the students focused on the good that they are doing.
At the end of each week they "cash in" their points at my teacher store.
They have a chance to buy school supplies like notebooks, highlighters, erasers, and pencils. I also have snacks like chips, candy, and other treats they like. I have found that students appreciate the school supplies and look at it as a way to "buy" things they need for school without having to ask their parents. One student told me once, "Ms. I already told my mom not to worry about buying me a notebook 'cuz I was gonna get one at the end of the week." Comments like these let me see the importance of the "teacher store."
I have been doing this now for over a year, funded mostly by me and from donors from previous projects. I truly would appreciate the support to continue to have this for my kids.
