My students need books and engaging materials that give them opportunity to read about science and increase their academic science vocabulary.

My Students
There are 29 young students in my classroom who come from high-poverty home situations, and have not had enough experience with science and the scientific method to understand the science questions they are being asked to answer.
My students come to school with super attitudes and really want to work hard to learn at school.
Nearly 90% of all students qualify for free lunch (the poorest in the whole district), and about half of my students speak a language other than English as their first. Several families are homeless, and we have a high transiency rate. Besides these challenges, our school is housed in the oldest school building available and is showing its age. Sadly, our standardized test results are evidence of the educational environment and home life that these children experience every day.
My Project
When it comes to science, scientific method, and science-related vocabulary, my students have very little experience (or none at all). My idea with this proposal is to take a step toward solving that issue with engaging science materials, and "game" type teaching tools in which students will be interested on more than just the first occasion.
In just two years, they will be asked to make state standard on a standardized science test and the very small amount of resources we have in my school will simply not be enough to get them there. These science materials will help me design lessons plans and class activities to light the spark of science-love that students need.
I am an experienced teacher, and chose to come to my school this year because I wanted to serve where the need is greatest.
I am finding that my classroom is sorely under-equipped and lacking what other schools have considered essential materials for getting students to standard, especially in math and science. Adding these fun and engaging science games will be one key to unlocking their enjoyment of science for years to come, as well as increase their speaking vocabulary of science terms.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
