My Students
Remember when you first entered the working world and lacked skills and experience? Now imagine that you also have a disability which complicates your job search. A disability also means lesser chances of learning these skills on one's own after high school. You can help.
My students are 18-22 years of age and have moderate to severe intellectual (and in some cases, physical) disabilities.
Rather than stay in a high school classroom through the age of 22, they have opted to participate in a Transition Program, designed to give them real-life skills. These skills, such as banking, using public transit, learning computer programs, and running a business will better the odds that they become productive adults with as much independence as possible.
My Project
The requested materials will be used by my students as they learn to make greeting cards and run a business. They will be involved in learning all aspects of the business, including making a projected budget, keeping an inventory of supplies, using equipment to design and make greeting cards that are salable, marketing product to potential customers, and bookkeeping for the business. Students will determine how any profit will be spent through a democratic process of discussion and voting. I am requesting card stock and decorative papers that my students can use to make greeting cards.
All activities learned by running this business will give students an advantage when they are looking for work after leaving the program.
As we all know, in our current job market, the more experience, the better!
