My Students
I want to create a reading center that makes reading come to life. Most students at the school are low income and do not have access to the public library: therefore, the school library is the only location they can receive reading materials that are tailored to their reading levels and interest.
My students come from around our city.
They come from single parent and low income homes with limited transportation. We have a large ESL and special education population that is growing each year. The majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and we are 85% minority populations. When looking at different indicators, almost all of our students are at risk and in need of intervention and support.
My Project
We are blessed to have a large library. Unfortunately much of the room has been pieced off to service other needs of the school and all reading materials are in one area. While we have made great strides in making the library accommodating and the material offered tailored to our students interest and ability levels, there is not a place for the students to read or study. I want to provide a place where students can sit and read, study or work with one another on projects. The chairs currently in the library are hard plastic and or wood classroom chairs. I want to create a space that is welcoming and comfortable. I want the students to want to come to the library and access the resources that will help them succeed though out high school.
Many of my students are reluctant readers who will not check out a book, but will read given the opportunity.
By making the library more welcoming, it will provide a place for students to read, study, and access other library resources. Right now many students do not come to the library, by creating a reading area, the library will have a new purpose and service more students. Dr. Seuss said it best, "The more you read, the more things you will know." Please help me create a welcoming space!
