I teach 1st grade in an urban public school. I have terrific students who love to read and write, because we celebrate literacy as something that can be fun and empowering. At the beginning of the school year, even students who cannot read yet will emulate classmates by picking up books and making up stories to go along with the pictures they see. They are so creative, and their enthusiasm is what leads to their academic success.

During the past three years of working in my school district, there have never been available funds to purchase classroom printer ink. This is so sad in our technologically advanced society, because it creates an academic disadvantage for urban students- students who already have so many obstacles to face in their everyday lives. My students love to read and write. When they finish their assigned classwork, one of their favorite things to do is to write make-believe stories. It would be nice if students could publish their own classroom anthologies to be shared and celebrated with their classmates and families.

We already have classroom printers, but we need enough ink to get us through the school year. My students should be able to recognize the successes and support the growth of their classmates. They can do this with the excitement that comes with being able to publish their work.

If this project is funded, my students will be able to compile and publish anthologies of various genres and subjects. We will have many fun projects throughout the year that will keep them excited about literacy!
