My Students

The class created a body of work that I call, "Communicating Through Photography in a Nonverbal World." We would like to share the images with the community but need additional supplies to do so.

Each student is unique in ability and personality.

Half of the class are non-verbal emerging readers. Therefore, using photography, as an educational tool, has proved to be effective. I have been working with these students for 3 years and through this experience, I've found that photography "levels the playing field" and builds self-confidence. I've written lesson plans to teach literacy, math, communication development, history, and social justice, through taking pictures. For example, at it's core, all the lessons follow a similar format. We discuss photos. The students create their own photos. They edit the photos on a computer, and print them out. They make connections to the real world, and share with peers. Also, we're excited to have been offered a gallery exhibition and will share with the community! I created this classroom project with this objective of Empowering Students Through Art.

My Project

My students need twenty-five 11x14 black frames, mattes, and various exhibition supplies. Through previous donations, the class has the camera equipment, a photo printer, iPads and a laptop needed to create an exhibition. We secured a venue to showcase the students' artwork. However, we are still in need of frames and exhibition supplies . Without these resources, the students miss a lot of what is behind the teaching principals of this project. For instance, I am following a teaching standard approach: using knowledge of effective verbal, non-verbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. The camera serves as a teaching tool, to identify and develop modes of culturally sensitive communication. This classroom project has been a huge success but now we want to celebrate this success and share it with the community. We will exhibit the work at local restaurants and throughout the school. We will visit the exhibits with class trips and in the evening for an opening reception.

I model asking questions, create rich discussions, convey ideas, and draw connections.

The lessons have an interdisciplinary connection. For example, students learned math, technology, literacy skills, science – all through photography. Now the students can meet with members within the community and discuss their work and experiences. This gives these students, who are non-traditional learners, the chance to learn in a visual, kinesthetic, or tactile way!
