The most exciting part of this project is that my students; Leianna, Mahala, and Autumn want to help teach our elementary students about agriculture!
My students decided they wanted to do something to help prepare elementary students for the world of agriculture - including growing plants, knowing what soil is, and where their food comes from. They worry about too many kids not eating healthy and the side affects that comes with eating "junk."
My students will develop leadership skills that will completely carry over to college - they will be required to interact with elementary students and their teachers appropriately and professionally. Students will also be required to practice their public speaking skills so they are good at explaining their topics to the elementary students.
In Their Own Words
The goal I am trying to accomplish is to make elementary students more involved in their food decisions and for them to find out that food doesn't come from the grocery store - someone has to grow it! We are requesting books so we can read to elementary students so they can learn about agriculture and where their food comes from.
I will be a leader in bringing this project to life by helping organize what days we will go to the elementary and participate in the Agriculture Literacy program at the elementary school. I will also help by actually explaining and working with the kids.
This project is important to me and our school community because we are a rural district and not a lot of people know where our food comes from. Our teacher has worked to receive grants to grow gardens, but we want to create a little bit of knowledge with our students before they participate in the community garden.
