Student Learning and Family Engagement Through Implementing a Unique Program!

My Students

My students are from an inner-city section of Cleveland, known for unsafe streets. We focus on making safety one of our top concerns at school because a feeling of safety allows you to focus on learning while at school. My students are in the fifth and sixth grade, working to succeed in education with obstacles that we are trying to overcome in order to match our counterparts in more affluent areas.

In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.

The dropout—or pushout—rate for urban students in this area hovers at more than 50%. As a teacher in a public school setting, I need to do more to engage my students and their families. I want them to believe in education and to take ownership of their learning.

We are part of a larger school that celebrates Inclusion. I teach with two additional colleague for English Language Arts and Mathematics. I work with students with varying disabilities in a Resource Room as well as in the Inclusion Classroom. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, accessing general content in different ways, and celebrating successes on a daily basis!

My Project

According to "The New York Times," "PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program (with Family Playlists®" is a "...multi-lingual, mobile friendly homework innovation that leverages the 'learning by teaching' strategy to have students teach what they are learning to a family partner at home." This unique program includes: 12-month access to "PowerMyLearning's award winning Family Playlists®," Launch webinar, Personalized 1:1 Sessions, Access to quarterly webinars, Official certificate of completion, and Access for up to 4 teachers at my school.

By implementing the "PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program (with Family Playlists®)," I will be able to strengthen the learning relationship between students, teachers, and families.

This program offers Professional Development along with an engaging platform that will help me strengthen students’ academic understanding and social-emotional learning (SEL) skills.
