Student Identities Made Visible Through Reading

Help me give my students reading materials that reflect their identities. These books will help my students pursue literacy goals of independent reading.

My Project

I work in a Minneapolis public school as a pull-out English teacher for students who receive special education services. My students have an intense passion for learning which I try to quench with a love of reading.

The students in my classroom have a vast range of reading abilities, and I want to ensure that I have books that everyone can access.

I have added many of my own personal books to our classroom library; however, I would like my students to have access to stories written by people who look like them.

These amazing books will give my students the gift they can open again and again! I selected books requested by my students as we continue our journey of silent and sustained reading.

These books reflect diverse stories and perspectives by mostly authors of color. Windows and Mirrors - I want my students to see themselves in the stories they read as well as explore other identities to nurture understanding and empathy.
