This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The materials requested for our "School Garden Essentials" project will provide essential, hands-on learning experiences for our agriculture students. Many of these students thrive in settings where they can learn by doing. With access to gardening tools, soil, seeds, compost bins, and irrigation supplies, they will be able to apply what they learn in the classroom to a living, growing space. These items will support lessons in plant biology, soil health, sustainable agriculture, and food systems, while also teaching valuable life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving. The garden will serve as an outdoor classroom and a safe, welcoming environment where students can connect with nature and see the direct results of their hard work.

The goal of this project is to build a fully functional, student-led garden that enhances academic learning and emotional growth.

This space will help students better understand the agricultural process from seed to harvest, develop practical skills that can be used in the workforce, and foster a sense of pride and ownership in their school. Over time, we envision the garden becoming a hub for cross-curricular projects and community engagement, including school culinary programs and family events.

Our students are exceptional young people who have faced significant personal and academic challenges. As students at a continuation high school, many have struggled in traditional learning environments but continue to show up with determination, resilience, and a genuine desire to succeed. They are creative, capable, and eager to learn in ways that feel relevant and meaningful. Agriculture gives them that opportunity. This garden will not only support their learning—it will stand as a testament to their growth, strength, and potential.
