My Students

WGS is located on the lost coast of California in an area that is so remote, California Highway 1 stops before you reach it. This beautiful community school exists because the residents wanted their children to go to school in the same community in which they lived. The parents came together to build the school using their own resources and skills. It is a magical, forested setting located on the side of a mountain where everyone is family. The students have attended school together their entire lives. They know and love each other as only a family can.

My Project

At WGS, the students participate in a class called SDL. SDL is an abbreviation. It stands for Student Directed Learning. It is based on Google's concept of twenty percent time. Google gives twenty percent of the time their employees spend at work on projects chosen by the employees. We have given our students this same freedom. They are allowed to pick their own learning project to spend one class period on. Students work weekly on their projects. They blog about their progress, turn in deliverables and at the end of the year, they deliver a TED talk to their community about their projects. It is an amazing opportunity!

SDL is an amazing opportunity for the students because they are given the freedom to discover who they are and what it is that they are passionate about, as well as, build responsibility, organization and ownership.

Students will begin their SDL class by reading non-fictional texts about people who have made an impact on the world. They will learn about and see excellent examples of real-life problem solving through a specific novel study. The novel "Iqbal" will be used to teach my students about tolerance and empathy. Tolerance and empathy are unique tools that can guide students through the tough decision making process involved in this class. "Iqbal" provides students with the opportunity to be inspired by the world and those people who have fought to make it a better place.

The books that I am requesting will provide a library for the students to reserve. They will use these resources to learn more about how they can make a positive impact on the world around them.
