Student-Created Virtual, Blended and In-school Hydroponics STEM design
Help me give my students supplies to learn from and build their own Aerogarden or Juice Plus self-watering hydroponics garden that can be utilized in their own homes for clean eating and water conservation.

My Students
I serve Gifted and Talented students in a highly diverse, low-income district. The students come from many different backgrounds and a majority of our students speak a second language. Our students come from supportive families who want the best for their kids but often do not have the resources they need to assist them. These students are focused and excited to learn.
Gifted students are tomorrow's leaders, inventors, problem-solvers and creators!
Providing them with opportunities to think critically and collaborate is essential for their success while providing them more opportunities to be more college and career ready!
My Project
Our classroom hydroponic garden has been a huge hit and center-piece for learning. Students have studied the concepts of water conservation, sustainability, pollination, vectors, and light wavelengths in relation to their effect hydroponics systems. I would love the opportunity to level this activity up and incorporate STEM through design and 3d printing.
Students will be challenged to design & create Hydroponics gardens based off the Aerogarden being requested and/or JuicePlus hydroponics garden (already in class) by comparing and contrasting the effectiveness of both systems.
Students will be encouraged to study the designs of these two gardens through virtual and in-person instruction whereas then they can create and design their own system. Students at home and in the building will have access to these seeds, hydroponics supplies, pumps, and chemicals (under teacher supervision) to maintain the start of their systems and test their prototypes.
Students will be encouraged to design and 3d print additional supplies they may need that they can pick up, or I can deliver to their homes. If they are in school, they will be able to take their hydroponic garden home. Virtual and in-school students will also be taught about converting their systems to aquaponics gardens in order to keep costs down and avoid harsh chemicals.
In previous years, I have noticed the positive social and emotional needs of students met through a classroom garden. Each student's self-esteem will be enhanced through designing and caring for their plants and it will help with the isolation of our virtual students. The addition of take-home, edible gardens also serves their families with nutrient-rich side salad options in a time when several families are out of jobs and struggling financially.
