Our scholars are a diverse, vivacious bunch. They come from various neighborhoods throughout San Francisco to learn in our small school community. Ninety-nine percent of our scholars are students of color, and nearly seventy-five percent of them are English Language Learners. All of them are amazing.
Almost all of our students come to us reading below grade level, but they make huge strides each year---some of them four or five grade levels---through their hard work, dedication, and high standards.
My Project
Our current seniors have requested a novel that can help them better understand on what is happening in Afghanistan. Khaled Hosseini's brilliant second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is just that: a novel that will help them better contextualize current events.
Many of our students come to us reading far below grade level and by allowing them to choose their texts, we are empowering them to engage with reading in a new way.
It is especially crucial that our students each have their own copy of the text to work with both in school and at home.
