Student Choice Reading = Empowerment and Life-Long Learning!

My students need 3 additional sets of texts to add to our class collection of Book Club selections for a segment of my English course, Club Choice Reading.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Dunn's classroom raised $420

My Students

Student-selected reading is something that keeps students motivated to keep reading, and reading in a "club choice" setting encourages students to control their own reading schedules, activities, discussions, and get the most out of the experience. A love of reading fosters life-long learning!

My English students are motivated, intelligent, and hungry for new reading.

Our school is a college-prep, public, urban, inquiry-driven, project-based small school that attracts students from all over the city. Half of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Most, if not all, are college-bound. I love my students and I would love to bring them some of the best contemporary, intelligent, thought-provoking young adult literature to devour in the context of my class. This year, severe budget cuts in the School District of Philadelphia has led to a non-existent book budget. Simply put, there is no money in our school to purchase new texts. More than ever, we need generous donors to help us provide these resources.

My Project

With 3 more sets of books, students in all of my English sections will be able to "club choice" these texts, gain an appreciation for reading in a group and sharing this experience. Both Diaz and Green write effectively for teens; they use beautifully rendered prose, employ realistic and important conflicts, and never talk down to the audience. The Full Spectrum is a compilation of young adult memoir writing on LGBTQ issues. From these selections, my students will use inquiry, research, collaboration, and reflection to get to the heart of these characters and infuse their own life experiences into the mix. They will also present their reading and club work to the larger class and thematically thread it through the other work we are doing. With multiple copies I can also make it available to kids for Independent Reading, something I require in both semesters. Now, kids don't have to wait for the single copy to come back!

Donations for this project will help bring one of the best recent young adult books out there into the classroom.

Students will gain independence, preparation for college, and a sense of life-long learning through these selections and also the "club choice" process by which they will be presented in the classroom. These are books that kids will be talking about long after the school day is over, and ones that they will push their friends to read.
