This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the amazing opportunity to teach 28 energetic and engaging fourth graders! They love hands-on learning! One of our favorite learning activities is reading with flashlights!
Each of my fourth grade scholars learn in their own way!
My students love to be successful learners! In our classroom students have a variety of options as they learn. Some students sit at desks, some lie on the floor, others would benefit from a chair that allows them to move while they learn. Currently, the only seating option I have are standard classroom chairs and desks.
I teach in a Title I school in a suburban setting. My classroom consists of students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, family dynamics, and living situations. My students come from one parent homes, two parent homes, and homes where they are raised by a grandparent, aunt or uncle. Regardless of where my students come from, when they enter my classroom they become authors, scientists, mathematicians, readers, artists, musicians, and creators of amazing projects!
I love my classroom of energetic and kinesthetic learners! Having the option of choosing seating options in which they learn best would definitely allow my students to increase their learning .
My Project
Walk into my fourth grade classroom and you will see students doing their work at their desks, sitting on the floor, lying under their desk, or sitting with an adult at a separate table. Students know they can move about the room to sit where they feel they can learn best. This choice in seating allows students to begin to be in control of their own learning and advocate for themselves.
The challenge is that my classroom only has traditional chairs as choices for seating.
If I were able to offer a variety of seating options, students could make choices that work for their own learning needs. (I am frequently telling students to stop tipping back on their chairs!) A variety of seating options would facilitate on task learning because students would be comfortable and able to give their bodies what they need to be a focused learner.
Fourth grade is the perfect age for my scholars to begin to advocate for their own learning! With fidgets and flexible seating options, I envision my scholars to be able to choose the seating and movement option that keeps them focused on learning tasks.
