Student-Centered Learning

My Project

Student learning has been impacted by COVID-19 over the past year and a half. Students have struggled with the transition between online learning and in-person learning. Many struggled with online learning and now have significant academic and social gaps. I want my students to be able to explore, investigate, and apply science concepts in a collaborative learning environment to help foster student-centered instruction and to help strengthen social skills. The ability to interact with other students and with the concepts being taught will help ensure a deeper understanding of learning.

Hands-on learning increases student motivation and engagement which was lacking while learning online due to various reasons brought on by the pandemic.

Students can use these materials to better make sense of phenomena by allowing them to make observations, gather data, develop models, make explanations, and create solutions. All students will get a first-hand learning experience by performing various experiments and applying the concepts to their everyday lives. Due to gaps in learning, differentiated instruction is crucial to meet the needs of every student.

This project will ensure each student has equal access to high quality instructional materials and will promote academic and social gains. It will help students learn how to communicate more effectively by being able to manipulate materials while working in collaborative groups. It will also help the concepts being taught become more relevant to student lives, help students make connections to the outside world, and help them demonstrate their learning in multiple ways.
