This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work in a Title 1 school. It is well known that having good attendance increases student success, but sometimes the idea of sitting at a desk all day when you have a lot of other things on your mind or you are hungry, just doesn't seem doable.

My students are amazing young people that want to work hard, but at times, life gets in the way: family, hunger, etc, which means absenteeism is very high here.

Part of making learning a priority is to make the classroom comfortable AND a place where students can work. Having a "living room" workspace with floor seating, shared table space, and desks in the classroom does just that. Having choices for students invites them to work in a space that works for them. Only having desks limits some kids, and having this choice encourages students to come to class, stay focused, and be comfortable. I also try and provide snacks as high schoolers don't always eat what they need at lunch. Nothing stops learning more than being focused on your hunger rather than the work at hand.
