Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an urban high school where there is a lack of necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. I have taught here for 17 years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had.
I strive to expose them to as many diversified artistic experiences as I can.
Many of our students live up to 2 miles away from school and do not qualify for bus transportation. This situation results in frequent tardiness due to long walks, poor attendance especially during inclement weather, and a general lack of interest due to being tired upon arrival to school. This is not a productive way to start the school day because the students miss lessons and can easily become disengaged in learning.
My Project
It is hard to do well in school and have good attendance when there is the obstacle of getting to school on time. Many of our students have long walks which are even more difficult in the harsher weather. Also, many students do not have proper weather attire for the inclement weather we experience and arrive cold and sometimes wet.
Arriving at school late and tired often leads to students becoming disengaged in learning as well as stressed out.
We currently have a problem with excessive absenteeism and the lack of much-needed transportation to and from school contributes to the problem. Knowing that they can arrive on time and prepared for school will help to keep students engaged in attending school regularly. Students will not fall behind in their lessons and lose interest in coming to school.
Buying the pass for the month is often a financial burden many families cannot afford. Our district is high poverty and the students receiving the passes are grateful for the gift. They tell me how far they walk and how much the pass will help them out. The neighborhoods they walk through are often run down and full of abandoned buildings. Having a bus pass is a solution to arrive safe and on time with a positive attitude towards learning.
