it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
What excites me about this project is that my students feel immense pride in their writing. They are so proud of their work that they have requested to formally publish their work and make books to give to their family and friends.
My students developed this project idea based on the desire they have to publish their work. They were begging to have their latest work published, but sadly I could not swing the $200 Staples bill. They learned about professional publishing back in January when I had books bound for them as a new-year gift. I wish I could publish all their work for them, but sadly our school doesn't have the resources, I don't have the resources, and their parents weren't able to pay the $10 per book each unit. We did a brainstorm session of ways to publish their work and that's how the idea of getting a book binding machine was born.
The writing process is a laborious and rigorous process, often students get discouraged through this process. One technique used to keep students motivated is letting them know the publishing phase of the writing process will produce a tangible product. Keeping students motivated and excited about writing is a valuable social-emotional component of schools, and without the motivation component academics can not prosper. This project addresses the motivation component of writing and excites kids to write which is an essential skill for college and career success.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to produce professional looking published products. We want to be able to showcase our work, whether it is making an individual portfolio or making a book which compiles the work of all our classmates.
We will make the most of this leadership opportunity by working with our classmates to publish their work and to show them how professionalism can go a long way. In addition, we will work with the underclassman to publish an end of year book for them, since the official yearbook is only a senior yearbook.
We view this project as helping to fix the lack of motivation around written and bigger portfolio assessments. Having the capability to produce an actual product of work inside our school will be invaluable for increasing motivation to complete assessments and projects assessment. With the capability of a binding machine we can distribute student work in a professional format to other classes, our families, and our friends making us all feel that our work is valuable and worth our time.
