Help me give my students low storage shelves for the large instruments that are filling our room. Our Orff metallophones and xylophones are currently on a tall shelf that is inaccessible for children.
I am a classically-trained musician, and have been performing for 20 years; this year I decided to try teaching elementary music in a local public school, and I've fallen in love.
My students are learning that they are good at making music and that doing so is very therapeutic.
I am building a music program from the ground up; there has not been a strong tradition of music-making until now. With the help of Little Kids Rock, I have been able to provide instruction on ukuleles, keyboards, guitars, and hip-hop techniques. Over the past four months, I have witnessed the surliest, most difficult-to-reach students slowly blossom and allow themselves to come under the spell of music.
It is important to mention that our school serves some of the poorest families in our city; we receive the most Title I funding out of any school in our district. Our students face issues that require great strength on their part. I am so proud of them; they're actually teaching me a lot more than I believe I'm teaching them. I get so many hugs every day that I've lost count. I love them, and I want all the best for them.
My Project
We have a wonderful collection of Orff xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels, but no suitable shelves for them. They are currently in a locked closet on high shelves that students can't reach. I would love for my students to be able to get their assigned instrument when it's Orff time, and then put it away when we're finished with the lesson.
I often skip using the Orff instruments because the process of getting them out and putting them away takes too long.
Having the proper storage for our beautiful instruments will save valuable lesson time, and will allow my students with more opportunities to experience the joy of Orff.
