My Students

Our class is comprised of eight, amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction and daily living skills.

My Project

Our class runs on Velcro. We use Velcro on laminated visuals, picture icons, task cards, adapted work binders and many other classroom materials. We use Velcro in conjunction with visuals to label different parts of the classroom and to use for some students to communicate. Velcro is used to affix pictures to visual schedules and to adhere items to the board so they can be removed and replaced.

We go through so much Velcro in our classroom and always seem to be running out of it.

Your donation will help to make sure we are always able to keep up with the visuals that need to be made to support our students. A large order of Velcro will ensure that we are always prepared to create anything that our students need for their instruction. We appreciate your support and are hopeful we will be able to access the supplies our students need for this school year.
