it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At DHES, a Title One k-8 school serving around 800 students, we believe that music is an integral part of a well-rounded elementary education and is an important contributor to our students’ academic achievement. An important part of our music program is 6th and 7th grade guitar class. Our students are enthusiastic and passionate guitarists. They are driven and creative, often bringing original work to share in class. Guitar is important in many different cultures’ music and has been hugely influential in the popular music scene. It is an instrument our students listen to everyday, and our goal is to give them the tools to create and interact with the music they love while also exploring and learning about a diverse selection of music from around the world. We are partnered with the Lead Guitar program to have curriculum, teacher training, and a guitar expert assigned to our school. We have enthusiastic and hard-working students and well-trained teachers, but we are missing a fully functional guitar for every student.
A good quality instrument is an essential component of impactful learning.
Not only will this instrument last longer, but it will respond better and sound better, working with the student instead of against them. These guitars will be cared for and played by our program of 170 6th and 7th grade students. We also have a guitar club starting soon with huge interest and a self-formed mariachi group that has been playing together for two years that will benefit from these instruments. Our guitarists deserve well working instruments to hear the rewards of their hard work. Help us replace some of our aging and less functioning instruments so each student can have the guitar they deserve to learn with.
