This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Fifth Grade students want to be real life guitar heroes! I teach general music to First through Fifth Graders at a public charter school in urban California. My school is a Title V elementary school, where 92% of the students receive free or reduced price lunches. The student population is 88% Latino and 12% African American.

My fifth grade students are ready for a new musical challenge. Since Kindergarten these enthusiastic, talented students have been singing, dancing, moving, playing hand percussion instruments, and xylophones. Over the past year I have had a stream of requests to learn how to play guitar. I have therefore decided to teach a guitar unit to all the fifth graders in the spring. This will be their culminating musical experience before leaving for middle school where sadly no music program exists.

To get this unit going I am requesting guitars for my students. Each class consists of thirty students so I am kindly asking for 10 guitars for students to share in small groups. By the end of the unit students will be able to play simple chords to accompany the songs they are singing. They will also understand basic tonal harmony.

My little musicians are natural performers! With five years of musical training and experience already behind them they are eager to get their hands on a new instrument. The guitar is the perfect next step in their musical development. Sixty amazing and deserving students are excited to get strumming!
