My Students
My classroom is welcoming to students of all musical levels, where singing, movement, and literacy are incorporated into daily lessons. By the end of the year, I hope that my students can play classic and popular songs using the ukulele. My biggest challenge is not having classroom instruments.
In today's society we often see the arts being put on the sidelines.
At P.S. 234 The School of Performing Arts and Technology, teachers, students and administrators embrace the arts each and everyday. With a new music program in this Title 1 school, classroom instruments are scarce, and students lack the tools necessary to participate in a performance based music curriculum. Each day students enter my classroom and are eager to learn about music and wish to play instruments. These students come from a diverse community, including ELL and special needs, and I believe that music can change their lives for the better. As their teacher, I wish for nothing more than to provide them with the best music education, including learning how to play instruments. It would be their dream, as well as mine, to have these instruments in the classroom.
My Project
My students need 30 ukuleles to build our music program. With these instruments students will learn the skill of reading music. Students will learn how to play chords to popular and classic songs. Students will practice daily in the classroom and participate in our school assemblies and concerts. Students will not only learn music skills, but skills such as focus, practice, and other social skills necessary when playing in a musical group. Students will be part of the first ukulele ensemble in the school.
Donations from generous individuals will change the lives of my students.
Most of them have had no formal music education, which is why I am reaching out for this opportunity. Students will be able to actively engage in the music learning process. This will open the doors to creativity, imagination, dedication, and musical passion for all of my students. It would change their lives forever.
