Struggling Readers Want to Shine Bright Like Diamonds!
My students need a new dry erase/magnetized board to help learn new material needed to succeed and enhance their learning.New books will allow them to explore new ideas.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I am working with an amazing group of Special Education students in grades 4 and 5. Many of them are also English Language Learners. They are eager to learn and have expressed an interest in reading. Most of them are reading at least 2 levels below their grade.
I am working with Special Education students in a Self Contained Classroom.
It is a wonderful experience but also a challenging one. My students are from a low income area. They each need different materials and learning experiences in order to be successful. They struggle daily to understand math, reading, writing, science and social studies. As a teacher it is my job ensure they are cared for, listened to, motivated, encouraged, empowered, safe, respected and happy. They are taught to believe in themselves and accomplish anything they put their minds to. I try to create a classroom environment where there is a love for learning, the ability to ask questions, and the fostering of creativity. They are very supportive of each other. They cheer each others accomplishments and aid one another when they need help. Each student looks out for one another and shares without question. I am there to support them and create a love for learning.
My Project
The other day in my 4/5 grade class a student asked,"Miss Bernardino can you clean the dry erase board? It's dirty!" I wish I could say sure let me erase it. Unfortunately this is not the case. My dry erase board is ready to retire. It is crumbling and will no longer clean. This is an important tool in my class because we need the dry erase board to teach the two daily and different small groups.Without it we would be lost.
After reading "Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind" it sparked a classroom conversation among my students of books they liked to read. They asked if we had more Amelia Bedelia, Junie B. Jones, Mr. Putter, and Andrew Clements. They are eager to tell me about what they read! This is music to a teacher's ears! My struggled readers are excited about reading and want to read more. The love of finding authors and stories they love is priceless and invaluable. A picture is worth a thousand words but a kid who had DISCOVERS A LOVE FOR READING is PRICELESS.
A new magnetized dry erase board will help students see examples clearly.
Colors coding helps then tremendously! My students are struggling readers. Through fiction book series they have found books and authors they love to read. As a teacher it is with great pleasure that I am able to shape young minds to create a love of reading that will encourage them to be life long readers. These books will enable their continued growth as readers. Please help to inspire young minds one book at a time!
