This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had difficulty reading a book or understanding what the story was about? My students experience this daily. They struggle when they are on their own and do not know where to begin when answering questions. These kits will help them work independently and build the skills needed.
My students are currently in a transition classroom.
Transition means they are below their grade level. Currently my students are testing at a second grade level in a fourth grade classroom. I have one student who currently reads on a first grade level. Many struggle with basic concepts and facts. They need intense instruction and follow through with basic skills. We are currently located at a charter school in an urban community. They are very enthusiastic students who love to learn but struggle. They do their best to always try as hard as they can.
My Project
I am requesting listening packs so students can listen to a story while following along. There are also guided questions read to them about the story which they need to answer. These CDs guide students through the text to find the answer. Our students are well below their grade level and need intensive instruction all day long. With these CDs and kits, my students will able to see and hear the material at the same time. These resources deal with nonfiction and fiction text, and also comprehension. Hearing a question and trying to read a question on their own makes a huge difference.
Due to the fact that many of my students are struggling readers, they do not show their true potential because they are unable to read the directions. Through these activities they will have someone reading for them so they can hear how they should be reading the text to help with fluency. This will help when it comes to answering questions on tests because they will already have had practice.
Through your donation, my students will have a chance to be exposed to material they couldn't do on their own.
This will also allow me as the teacher to reach more of my students because I will know they are always hearing what a great reader should sound like.
