Several of our new students are reading below grade level. Our library was not prepared for so many students needing level B books. Our B Bin is empty!
I teach First Grade at a Charter School in a very low-income neighborhood in New York.
My students are predominantly of minority backgrounds. They work very hard and we want to do everything we possibly can to help them be successful in school and in life.
My Project
Students learning to read need "Just Right Books" to build the skills and strategies they need to figure out unfamiliar words. These B books will fill up the sad, empty B Bin sitting in our library. We have many students at level B and each of them needs books to read in class and take home for homework each night.
These level B books are absolutely crucial to the reading lives of these children.
Without these books, struggling readers will be stuck reading black-and-white copies while the rest of the class is enjoying real books. Please help us keep this from happening to these kids who need inspiring books the most!
