My Students
Some of my students are beginning to discover that books can transport them to other times and places. Learning history from a textbook can be boring, dull, and often incorrect. I work hard to incorporate oral histories and personal narratives into the curriculum.
My students are creative, active, boisterous, and curious.
They want to know more about the world outside of their small town. They love music, movies, and being involved in the community. Our school is the center of the town and students receive a lot of support from members within it.
My Project
My students need multiple copies of books on the American Civil Rights Movement, graphic novels about World War II, and other books and videos about America's story. When the American History class studies the Vietnam War, they will read The Things They Carried and hear a first person's perspective on war, honor, and our place in the larger world. I will use this reading in conjunction with having students meet and discuss war, honor, and the larger world with returning veterans at our local VA hospital and a classroom discussion with local Vietnam veterans.
I will use the graphic novels about pre-war Japan and Berlin, to help my Modern World History students gain a better perspective about the turmoil and discussion in these societies prior to World War II. I will use the PBS video with my students as they learn personal stories from America's westward expansion. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, This Nonviolent Stuff will get you Killed, and Eyes on the Prize will be used as we learn more about the African American experience in our history. The Devil's Highway will provide information and perspective and immigration issues in the Americas.
Donations to this project will purchase literature, graphic novels, and videos that will expose students to alternative perspectives that they often don't get in our small rural homogeneous community.
These materials will be used to connect students to the larger American narrative and be way to learn peoples' history and not just official history from their textbooks.
