This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students often show a different side of themselves during recess and lunch time than teachers get to see in the classroom. I feel blessed to share this time with them because, despite the chaos, it has allowed me to remain up-to-date with current trends and to connect socially-emotionally with them in a way that was more limited in academic settings. Furthermore, it gives me countless opportunities to coach life skill development through play.
My 9-10 year old students take great pride in being able to start, set-up, run, and clean-up their own recess, but without durable equipment recess can becomes yet another source of frustration and missed opportunities for our kids.
The soccer nets provide a much needed replacement to make-shift water bottle borders, helping us focus our aim and keep the ball out of the street. The badminton net promotes teamwork, accuracy, communication, and time management. The extra-large duffle and hula hoop bags now make it possible to transport equipment to and from the classroom without clutter, and contain many more options than we've traditionally had for students to enjoy their exercise time.
Having recess on my schedule has led to so many added benefits as a self-contained elementary teacher, making me an advocate for other schools to do the same. Starting the school year with these materials would make a big difference in our students' daily experience, both individually and collaboratively. Thank you for helping us make this happen!
