Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students in our Structured Learning Class (SLC) of ten students have big hearts and work harder than most students. Their autism creates cognitive delays. I also teach 30 more students, half of whom have special needs, in my enrichment, advisory, social skills, study lab, and dyslexia classes. These students also benefit from structure and organization.

Establishing workstations and break/leisure systems allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them to be independent.

Currently, my students are dependent on me to keep time. With individual timers, they can focus on the work.

Students who have difficulty self-regulating can make a choice of working towards a reward for work completed. This could be a jolly rancher, mint, fidget, chips, snack or leisure time. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice of rewards or when they are reminded how to self-regulate and have basic needs met to function on a social or academic level. They almost always make good choices when there is a system or routine in place.

My students would benefit from a station using engines or making words. They are more engaged and get more work completed as they work on independence with teacher prompts.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and display less disruptive behaviors with their peers when they are given a choice and have a routine. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them stop watches and organized systems to effectively manage time.

Snacks help my students self-regulate. Structured work/leisure STEM centers with engines or reviewing letter patterns help them take breaks from computers and work independently. I have seen how choice, routines, and structures can positively affect my students' work and demeanor.
