Structure & Consistency: Binders Needed

My Project

Every student craves structure and consistency. As a teacher still in my first five years of the profession, I have been reflecting on ways to provide my students with more structure and consistency. After brainstorming different solutions, here is the idea I want to try: At the start of the year, every student will receive a binder and pencil pouch. When students walk into class, the first thing they will do is pick up their binders. At the end of class, students will place any hole-punched notes or assignments into their binders and place them back on the shelf as they leave. Students will always have a pencil for my class in their pouch, and if they are absent, I can easily put assignments into the absent students' binders. Every 1-2 weeks, students will receive a score for having all of the required notes placed in their binder. They will also receive a score for completing the notes.

For students, especially students of lower economic backgrounds, consistency, and structure is vital to their feelings of safety and success in the classroom

This binder system is one way to provide structure so that students know exactly a) what to do when they enter and leave class, b) where to place their notes and other assignments, and c) learn a new organizational strategy that they can implement for future classes.
