My Project
Every student craves structure and consistency. As a teacher still in my first five years of the profession, I have been reflecting on ways to provide my students with more structure and consistency. After brainstorming different solutions, here is the idea I want to try. Every student will receive a binder and pencil pouch at the start of the year. When students walk into class, the first thing they will do is pick up their binders. At the end of class, students will place any hole-punched notes or assignments into their binders and place them back on the shelf as they leave. Students will always have a highlighter and pencil for my class in their pouch, and if they are absent, I can easily put assignments into the absent students' binders.
For students, especially students of lower economic backgrounds, consistency, and structure is vital to their feelings of safety and success in the classroom.
This binder/pencil pouch system will address two main struggles. It will provide structure so that students know exactly a) what to do when they enter and leave class, b) where to place their notes and find a pencil, and c) learn a new organizational strategy they can implement for future classes. It will provide supplies for students who may struggle to afford them.
