Stronger Readers Make Strong Writers

My Students

The writers I teach impress me everyday. They have a strong work ethic and strive for excellence in all that they do, meeting challenges both academic and personal with great character.

Over ninety percent of my students are Hmong American, and many struggle with English language proficiency.

You can imagine the challenges that a composition course presents. Grammar rules that native English speakers simply absorbed as small children must be kept at the front of my students' minds as they attempt mastery of rhetoric. All this, and they're still eager to improve their academic writing. Your donation will help me honor this strong work ethic.

My Project

In our classroom, a poster hangs on the wall, outlining the habits of effective writers. The number one habit? "Effective writers read... a lot!" When students are consistently reading the work of effective writers, they are exposed to more sophisticated writing styles. This can, in turn, embolden students to attempt new syntactical and rhetorical strategies in their own writing. However, not all students are passionate readers.

Students tend to think that "reading" only applies to the novels they study in their literature courses; this project aims to broaden that view and expose students to a great variety of writing, especially non-fiction.

The magazines will appeal to students who may have previously thought that strong readers only read book-length texts, and the books will push more comfortable readers to immerse themselves in a new subject. Your donation will allow students the opportunity to grow their passion for reading, an essential step toward becoming more effective writers.
