This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The energy of a five year old! For these young minds, focusing their thoughts and brains begins with self control of their bodies. I have found that basic yoga poses help them to develop that control. Yoga mats would give each child a protected space in which to center their bodies and minds.
My students are bright, enthusiastic, and so willing to learn.
The wiggles and wandering thoughts sometimes get in the way! They are loving the balance, flexibility and strength poses that we practice. It is making a difference in their powers of concentration and their abilities to regulate their emotions. They do not have access to after-school sports due to economic hardship, but this is a gift that I have the power to give them. They will use these skills, hopefully, throughout their lives.
My Project
Imagine a class with 24 calm, focused five year old children! Each child will learn that their mat is a special place where they improve their bodies and minds. The mats will help them (and me!) maintain personal space for everyone. These students will remain with me in First Grade, thus they will spend more than a year with these mats.
I have to think out of the box in order to help my students overcome their challenging backgrounds.
They need every advantage that I can give them. I need to help them build strength, focus, flexibility and balance so that they can meet the many challenges that lie ahead of them.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
