My project needs books which are more appropriate for my students' reading abilities so that they may be more successful on classroom and state assessments (VGLA - Virginia Grade Level Alternative)
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bolden's classroom raised $493
This project is fully funded
My literature classroom consists of eighth grade students who receive special education services for specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and/or other health impairments.
Our library has a couple of the Bluford High Series books which my students found extremely interesting. They were all excited about reading them and couldn't get them fast enough. I have never seen them more excited about reading.
Unfortunately, there are not enough copies of these books and all of the titles are not present. More specifically, I am requesting other books of similar topics in which my students has shown an interest.
Also, 99% of my students are participate in VGLA which is the alternative to the Virginia SOL. Students have to complete a portfolio of work/assessments on each and every English Literature SOL. However, much of the reading is too difficult for my students and they are unable to be as successful as they could with lower reading materials. I have to provide these materials if I am not using what was provided for me by the school system. "Akeelah and the Bee" is a book my students expressed an interest in reading.
I am requesting specific book titles which will continue to encourage and spark my students will and desire to read. More importantly, I am requesting 12 "Akeelah and the Bee" books which will assist my students in being more successful with VGLA.
Your help will ensure that my students have every opportunity and resource available to them so that they may be successful. My students are often very self-conscious and lack a strong desire to do well because of their disabilities. However, with more appropriate and exciting books for them to read, their interests and willingness to strive for success will be renewed. Please make it possible for them to have what they need to do well.
