it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Who knew Goldilocks was right? The class books in storage at our middle school barely get used, because they are intended for either elementary aged readers or high school students. We need books that are "just right"; books that will captivate the interest of my diverse set of students.
My students primarily come from low socioeconomic households where moms and dads have several jobs just to keep afloat of the bills.
Little money is spent on classroom supplies. Above the setbacks my students come to class everyday in hope to get an education and break away from the monotony of their lives.
My middle school students arrive to our magnet school bright and early at 7:45 and work through 2:15 in the afternoon. All students are required to take a reading class and they have one period of "relaxation" or as we call it electives.
Overall, my students come from all walks of life. Where there is one challenging student, there are five that truly prove that they are just yearning for knowledge. The benefits of being a magnet school is the influx of critical thinkers in our magnet classes. It is truly a pleasure to work at my school, everyday is a new adventure.
My Project
It is my hope that with this class set of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, I will be able to inspire my students to think critically about a time in history that was not particularly fair to most. My students have a difficult time looking past color or neighborhood and I hope that the theme of this book will impact the way they view each other just as these two boys became friends looking past one being a Jew and the other the son of a German concentration camp solider.
In a time where students are constantly being bullied and picked on for their differences; maybe what it takes to break the stigma of the "us" versus "them" mentality is a heart-warming tale about two children that shouldn't be friends.
